The Morning of the Second Day
I took this class hoping that it would introduce me to manipulatives
and how to use them. That is all I expected because I had
my mind set that that I am going to be bored. After all, why
would this math class be different from any other; lectures,
assignments, and that inadequate feeling.
Boy was I surprised! The very first class showed me how exciting
mathematics (in our world) can be. We took an estimation activity
and kept taking it to different stages… all in a non-threatening
manner. The afternoon was filled with different choices that
allowed me to follow my interests.
I left that day saying, 'Wow, whoever would have thought
math can be fun!'
As great as that day was, it wasn't until very early in the
second class that there was a transformation! Again, you showed
me; I wasn't alone, not the only one worried about limitations.
This realization made me so comfortable, open, interested,
eager, no need for shields because now there wasn't a reason
to be afraid. If I couldn't do the problem/task there's no
reason to be embarrassed someone will show me another way.
Maybe I will be showing somebody how.
Soon I was sharing me ideas and techniques. I found myself
skipping lunch and being the last one to leave. Now I was
afraid to miss out! The lessons were so interesting and effective.
The activities were applicable, exciting, and fun. The materials
were plentiful and free!
It has always been my belief that the sign of a good teacher
was an excited student!
The morning of the second class was a very significant day
'I was free to learn.'
