Welcome to The Algebra Game
Algebra can be enjoyable when you play with a full deck! That's the whole idea behind The Algebra Game. This innovative teaching tool targets four areas of study: linear graphs, quadratic equations, conic sections and trig functions. Each of these topics is supported by an average of five card decks and a teacher's manual. The cards within each deck display graphs, equations, point pair cards or other topic-specific information that, when used together, support the notation of the equation. Supplemental decks are also available to expand the number of lessons in each area. Simply select the decks that best meet your lesson needs—or take the full house!

How The Algebra Game Works
Whether studying algebra basics or advanced equation functions, all students will benefit from The Algebra Game by learning to recognize relationships between cards. Up to 12 students or smaller cooperative learning groups can work together to form a multitude of algebra equations in each area of study.

Why use The Algebra Game?

Because everyone who plays wins! Here’s how students and educators alike will benefit from The Algebra Game:

Students will…

  • recognize connections between different card features,
  • understand how cards relate and write about those relationships,
  • build conjectures to support observations,
  • improve problem-solving skills, and
  • develop proficiency in recognizing algebraic equations.

Teachers and tutors will…

  • encourage cooperative learning,
  • gain additional ways to assess student achievement,
  • save time with ready-to-go lessons and worksheets,
  • be able to accommodate different learning styles, and
  • help students actively build knowledge with understanding.

Plus learning The Algebra Game is easy, especially with the help of these resources:

Teacher Manuals
A Teacher's Manual accompanies the card decks in each area of study. These manuals focus on ready-to-use cooperative learning activities with follow up discussion questions for student writing literacy and classroom discussion. Instruction-friendly black-line transparency masters and answer keys save prep time for teachers.

On-site Training: The Math Studio will provide on-site training to schools and school systems. Training covers classroom management, secrets of successful implementation, plus numerous middle school and high school classroom instructional techniques designed to motivate and engage all students in algebra learning. Students can make sense of linear equations by matching slope and y-intercept cards. They will quickly grasp the interconnectedness between cards and how the distinct parts – graphs, point pair, slope, and y intercept – fit together with equations.  All decks used together provide a greater variety of parallel and perpendicular line pairs for extra practice or added challenge.

Product Number Product name Description

All decks have 60 cards: 12 graphs with 5 matching components for each graph

AGL001 Deck a shows how the y intercepts change and illustrates parallel lines in pairs of equations
AGL002 Deck b  mixed practice using only integers
AGL003 Deck c shows slope rotation and perpendicular pairs
AGL004 Deck d  mixed practice
AGL005 supplement standard form equations for all decks
AGL010 not sold separately Revised Teacher's Manual 60 pages of ready to use cooperative learning activities and transparency masters

The quadratic formula is demystified as students piece together and match up the various parts —vertex, axis of symmetry, discriminant and quadratic formula. The goal for students is to match these cards to the factor, root, point pair, and graph cards to discover the connections to the quadratic equation. All decks have a sampling of non function parabolas and include several parabolas that are in translated positions.

By using all of the conic section decks together, students become proficient at recognizing conic equation characteristics for circles, parabolas, ellipses and hyperbolas. When each deck is used separately, Algebra Game players can study equation and graph characteristics — including foci, eccentricity, point pair, and standard form notation — in greater depth. All of the decks have three examples of  conic equations with translated origins.

All three trig functions — sine, cosine and tangent — and their reciprocals have matching graphs, point pairs, and equations.  Clues about a graph's amplitude and period are imbedded in equations so students learn how the equation effects the related graph.
